IT First Aid - Ep. 24: PC waking up from sleep by itself

You put the PC to Sleep at night, and at 3 AM it lights up the room, turning itself back on like a horror movie. The culprit is always an "overly sensitive" peripheral or a hidden scheduled task.

Auto Wake Up

1. Catch the Culprit

Open the Command Prompt (cmd) and type this magic sysadmin command: powercfg -lastwake. This command will tell you exactly what triggered the last wake event (often it's the network adapter or the mouse).

2. Revoke Permissions

If it's the mouse picking up vibrations, open Device Manager, right-click on your Mouse > Properties. Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer". Peaceful sleep guaranteed.

Auto Wake Up

2. Revocare i poteri

Sonni tranquilli assicurati.

IT First Aid - Ep. 21: Windows Search broken

You press the Start button, begin typing the name of a file or program and... nothing. The menu closes or loads indefinitely. The indexing database is corrupted.

Windows Search broken

1. Restart the Process

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the "Details" tab, and look for the SearchUI.exe (or SearchHost.exe on Windows 11) process. Right-click and select End task. Windows will restart it automatically, clearing temporary glitches.

2. Rebuild the Index

If that isn't enough, the index needs to be reset. Press Win + R, type control to open the classic Control Panel. Go to Indexing Options > Advanced. Under the Troubleshooting section, click the Rebuild button. It might take a while, but your search engine will be flawless again.

Fai clic destro e seleziona Termina operazione. Windows lo riavvierà automaticamente pulendo i glitch temporanei.

2. Ricostruire l'Indice

IT First Aid - Ep. 19: C Drive Full? How to Safely Free Up Hidden Gigabytes

The Problem: The C Drive Bar Turns Red

Your local C drive bar has suddenly turned red. You have emptied the recycle bin and cleared out your old download folders, but dozens of Gigabytes are still missing. Here is where these ghost files are hiding and how to safely recover your storage space without compromising OS stability.

Ghost Files

The Solution: Deep Cleanup and Automation

1. The Hidden Windows Update Folder

Every time Windows installs a major update, the system keeps a massive backup of the previous files just in case you need to perform a rollback. To remove this data surgically:

  • Press Start and type Disk Cleanup.
  • Run the utility with elevated privileges by clicking Run as administrator (or by clicking the Clean up system files button inside the app).
  • Scroll through the list, check the box for Windows Update Cleanup (on systems that haven't been maintained in a while, this can easily exceed 20 GB!), and click OK.

2. Automate with Storage Sense

In IT Management, automation is everything. To avoid having to repeat this process manually in the future, let's delegate the routine workload to Windows:

  • Press the Win + I keyboard shortcut to open Settings.
  • Navigate to System > Storage.
  • Toggle the Storage Sense switch to On.

From now on, this tool will work completely silently in the background, deleting orphaned temporary files and flushing browser caches as soon as the system detects a drop in available storage space.

IT First Aid - Ep. 18: Webcam and Mic not working

You join an important video call and your screen is black, or no one can hear you. You check the USB cables, and everything is fine. The real culprit is often Windows' paranoid privacy management.

Camera not working

1. The Windows Privacy Block

Windows 10 and 11 feature a master switch that disconnects peripherals at the software level. Press Win + I to open Settings. Go to Privacy & security.

2. Unlock Desktop Apps

Scroll down to "App permissions" and click on Camera (or Microphone). Ensure the master switch "Let apps access your camera" is turned On. The most crucial part: scroll to the very bottom and make sure the option "Let desktop apps access your camera" is enabled. Otherwise, legacy programs like Zoom, Teams, or OBS will be completely cut off.

Camera not working

IT First Aid - Ep. 16: PC taking off? (How to handle overheating)

You opened a slightly more complex Excel file than usual, and suddenly your PC starts making a sound like a Boeing 747 on the runway 🛫. You feel the chassis burning up and start wondering if you can use it to fry an egg 🍳.

Overheating is the sworn enemy of electronics. Not only does it reduce performance (the famous "thermal throttling", where the PC slows down to avoid melting), but it also dramatically shortens its lifespan.

1. Elevate that laptop

If you are using it on a bed or a couch, stop. Fabrics obstruct the bottom air vents. Use a rigid stand. If the fans can't breathe, the PC suffocates.

2. Check the Task Manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager. Is there a stuck process using 100% of the CPU for no reason? If so, select it, click on End task, and enjoy the sudden silence.

Task Manager

3. Physical cleaning

If you've had the PC for over a year, the internal heatsinks are most likely a quantum dust generator 💨. A can of compressed air sprayed (while the PC is turned off) into the vents can work miracles.

If you are a tinkerer, it's probably time to change the thermal paste on the processor. But that's a story for another kind of first aid.

IT First Aid - Ep. 15: Second monitor acting up ("No Signal")

No Signal Display

Working with a single screen after experiencing a dual-monitor setup is a bit like trying to drive by looking only in the rearview mirror. Unbearable. So you bought a second monitor, plugged it in proudly, and... "No signal". The screen stays blacker than your coffee grounds ☕.

Before declaring war on your HDMI cables, make sure Windows knows about your expansionist intentions.

1. The Win + P move

Press the Windows key + P simultaneously on your keyboard. A side panel will fly out. If it is set to "PC screen only", there is your culprit. Select Extend and watch the screen come to life.

2. Force detection

Right-click on an empty spot on the desktop > Display settings. Scroll down a bit and look for the Detect button. Sometimes Windows just needs a little manual encouragement.

3. The "Are you sure?" check

It sounds trivial, but verify that you plugged the cable into the dedicated graphics card (if you have a desktop PC) and not into the disabled motherboard port. It is the most common mistake ever, and nobody ever wants to admit it.

IT First Aid - Ep. 14: The Ghost Flash Drive (Plugged in, but not recognized)

Plugging in the USB drive. Hearing the comforting "Tu-dum" Windows sound. Opening File Explorer. Finding nothing. Starting to break a cold sweat because crucial documents are in there.

We've all been there. The "ghost flash drive" is a classic IT annoyance, but often your files are still safe and sound. The problem is simply that Windows is a bit confused and hasn't assigned it a drive letter, hiding it from your view.

The magic trick to make it reappear (Disk Management):

1.      Right-click the Start button and select "Disk Management".

Disk Management

2.      Wait a few seconds for it to load the list of drives. Look down. Do you see a block labeled "Removable" that matches the size of your flash drive? Bingo.

3.      Right-click on it (on the rectangular bar representing the space, hopefully saying "Healthy") and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths...".

4.      Click "Add", pick a letter from the dropdown menu (anything works, like the letter "Z"), and hit OK.

Go back to File Explorer. Like magic, your flash drive will be there, ready to use.

If, instead, Disk Management asks you to "Initialize" the disk... well, brace yourself psychologically, it might have physically failed.

Pronto Soccorso IT - Ep. 14: La Pendrive Fantasma (Inserita, ma non riconosciuta)

Infilare la chiavetta USB. Sentire il confortante suono "Tu-dum" di Windows. Aprire Esplora File. Non trovare nulla. Iniziare a sudare freddo perché lì dentro ci sono documenti cruciali.

Tutti ci siamo passati.
Guarda in basso.

Ghost USB

IT First Aid - Ep. 11 Windows 11 upgrade, with some troubles

Good morning everyone!

Here we are again, with a new problem, and obviously a new solution: the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

About time, you might say! But a tiny clarification is needed here: as an IT technician, one of the things that has always bored me is spending my free time fixing my own devices. Because of this, my devices are always the last ones to be put on the waiting list.

Better late than never. At this point, however, you might wonder what's so special about this how-to compared to the hundreds available on the internet, especially for a procedure that requires no dark magic. Well, in my case, as Murphy's Law dictates, things got a bit more complicated. I had originally set up an MBR partition instead of GPT, a problem compounded by the fact that I hadn't enabled the BIOS in UEFI mode nor enabled Secure Boot.

In short, I unconsciously complicated things just to make the solution more interesting. Let's proceed and see how we managed to get out of this IT mess.

Phase 1: The illusions of the Microsoft tool (MBR2GPT)

On paper, Microsoft provides us with a command-line tool that should do the magic: MBR2GPT. The idea is that, by running it with administrator privileges, it converts the disk from MBR to GPT without touching the data, creating a ready-to-use EFI partition.

Let's verify that the partitions are ready using the Microsoft tool:

mbr2gpt /validate /disk:0 /allowFullOS

If the validation is successful, we execute the command. Unfortunately for me, the validation failed, and I had to rebuild the bootloader manually. Once the bootloader was rebuilt, I moved on to the actual conversion:

mbr2gpt /convert /disk:0 /allowFullOS
WARNING: TO CONVERT PARTITIONS WITH BITLOCKER, IT IS NECESSARY TO SUSPEND OR DISABLE BITLOCKER FIRST, OTHERWISE YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO REBOOT THE PC.

The tool creates the EFI and MSR partitions and updates the BCD without formatting. Do not unplug the PC during the operation.

At this point, we need to restart the PC in UEFI mode. Let's proceed from Windows:
Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings → Restart.

UEFI boot

Upon reboot, we will have to enter the BIOS by pressing a key between F11 or F12 (depending on your PC manufacturer) before Windows boots. Once inside the BIOS, we will disable Legacy/CSM and set the boot mode strictly to UEFI. Save the settings and exit.

(Editor's note: If you have to use Diskpart to force a partition deletion like I did because of corrupt EFI volumes left behind, you might run into this beautiful Windows safety block: Virtual Disk Service error: Delete is not allowed on the current boot, system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume. Just use the override parameter to bypass it. And when fixing the bootloader with bcdboot, wait for the majestic Boot files successfully created.)

At this point, Windows will boot up, and we can proceed with the upgrade to Windows 11 by going to the Windows Update tab and clicking to check for updates. If this doesn't show the option to switch to Windows 11, the reason you are not seeing the update yet is simply a matter of server timing. Microsoft handles the transition to Windows 11 with a staged rollout. Even if your PC is ready today, the Windows Update algorithm might put you in a "queue" and show you the banner weeks or even months from now. Obviously, there is no reason to wait for Microsoft's server timelines. There is an official and direct method to trigger the update immediately, keeping all your programs, files, and settings intact.

Here is how to force a clean upgrade:

The Windows 11 Installation Assistant

This is the official Microsoft tool designed specifically for those who have a compatible PC but don't want to wait for the Windows Update notification.

  1. Go to the official Microsoft download page by googling "Download Windows 11" (make sure the site is microsoft.com).
  2. The first option at the top will be the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
  3. Click on Download Now.
  4. Run the downloaded file (Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe). Note: it might ask you to download and install the "PC Health Check" app for a final double-check; do it if prompted.
  5. Accept the license terms and click on Accept and install.

Note: If you run into TPM issues right after switching from Legacy to UEFI, you might see errors in Windows Security like Device health attestation isn't supported on this device and TPM storage is not available. Please clear your TPM. Simply click on Clear TPM in the UI and confirm upon reboot to reset the cryptographic keys.

At this point, the Assistant will do everything on its own. It will start the background download of Windows 11 (you can continue using the PC in the meantime), prepare the files, and, when ready, will ask you to restart. The reboot will take some time, similar to a large cumulative update, and upon completion, you will find yourself directly on the new Windows 11 desktop.

IT First Aid - Ep. 10 Black screen on boot: cursor is there, desktop is not.

You turn on the PC and face a black screen with only the mouse cursor. Don't panic.

1. The Secret Video Driver Shortcut

Often, the graphics driver failed to wake up. Use this keyboard combination: Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. You will hear a beep, the screen will flicker, and the video drivers will force-restart.

2. Restart the Explorer Process

If the screen stays black, the user interface crashed. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Click "File" > "Run new task". Type explorer.exe and press Enter to bring your desktop back to life.

Pronto Soccorso IT - Ep. 10 Schermo nero all'avvio

IT First Aid - Ep. 8 Action cannot be completed because the file is currently in use

It's one of the most frustrating errors in Windows. You're trying to delete a file, but the system locks it. Here is how to free it.

1. Check Background Programs

Even if you closed the app, the process might still be running. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), find the related program, and click "End task".

2. The Sysadmin Tool: Resource Monitor

If you don't know which program is holding the file, type resmon in the Start menu. Go to the CPU tab and use the "Associated Handles" search bar. Type the file name, and it will reveal the exact hidden process locking your file.

Ecco come "liberarlo".

1. Controlla i programmi in background

2. Lo strumento da Sistemisti: Monitoraggio Risorse

IT First Aid - Ep. 5 BSOD Blue Screen of Death :-)

BSOD

Final episode of the IT First Aid miniseries. The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is scary, but the system actually halts to protect components from physical damage, and it tells you exactly what went wrong.

Reading the Error Code

When the screen appears, look near the bottom: you will find an uppercase code (e.g., IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). That is your Google search key.

The Two Main Causes

  • Drivers: Did you just update a graphics card or plug in a USB? Boot into Safe Mode and remove the last driver. Use Windows + X, open "Device Manager" and look for yellow triangles.
  • Hardware (RAM): Frequent BSODs are a symptom of faulty RAM. Search the Start menu for "Windows Memory Diagnostic" and run the test to check your memory sticks.

Pronto Soccorso IT - Ep. 5 Schermo Blu della morte :-) (BSOD)

BSOD

Ultimo episodio della miniserie Pronto Soccorso IT.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL).

Pronto Soccorso IT - Ep. 3 La Stampante risulta Offline

  • Digita services.msc e premi Invio.
  • Cliccaci sopra col tasto destro e scegli Riavvia.
